The SDG 2 indicators used to track malnutrition among children under age 5 include stunting, wasting and overweight.
Worldwide, as of 2016:
• Stunting, or chronic malnutrition, affected 155 million children. They may never grow to reach their full height potential, and their brains may never develop to their full potential. This can diminish children’s learning achievements and, in turn, their productivity and earnings as adults.

• Around 52 million children (with some overlap with the 155 million stunted) suffered from wasting, of which 17 million were severely wasted. Children suffering from wasting are dangerously underweight for their height, and may also be affected by stunting, which puts them at increased risk of disease and death.
• An estimated 41 million children (with some overlap with the 155 million stunted) faced the impacts of malnutrition by being overweight. The result of expending too little energy for the amount of calories consumed, overweight can increase the risk of chronic disease later in life.

My Story
REBECCA G.
My name is Rebecca Garcia and I am the founder of Rebecca’s Children Clinic. I am 15 years old. I am born and raised in Miami, Florida. I was born to Cuban-American parents that left the island during their preteen years to seek greater opportunity.
I was raised in a loving Christian home, along with my two elder brothers. My parents have always been an amazing example to me in that they are hardworking, kind, loving, and generous. My favorite pastimes include swimming, dancing, and playing piano. I also love learning. My goal is to one day follow in the footsteps of many of my family members and become a doctor. It is my desire to specialize in pediatrics.
My choice in pediatrics is driven by my love for children. My love for children is also what inspired me to create Rebecca’s Children Clinic. I’ve always enjoyed helping others. Through Rebecca’s Children Clinic, I am able to help a larger group of people with a greater number of needs. I believe every child deserves to be happy and healthy. Through this preventive healthcare clinic, we are taking a step towards fewer sicknesses in children in the Dominican Republic.
Although I am sure my family's background in preventive medicine influenced my decision to undertake this project, each of us – regardless of background - is uniquely endowed with special abilities and sensibilities that, under the right circumstances, can evolve into practical efforts that provide relief to those who often lack the most basic necessities to embark upon healthy and successful lives. Despite many advances on the part of government, civic, and volunteer organizations in and outside the Dominican Republic on behalf of the country's orphaned children, there is still much to be done in the area of quality preventive healthcare and it is in this area that I feel I can make a difference.

Statistics, though useful in identifying a given population’s greatest need, in their cold emphasis on numbers can often fail to move us in the same way that the face of a child is able to. With this in mind, I would ask each of you to visualize the child behind every number, as all children, regardless of race, gender or economic circumstances, need quality preventive healthcare to grow up healthy and lead successful lives.
Although the many urgent needs orphaned children face call on all our resources, and the task may at times seem insurmountable, by concentrating on one area - providing free quality preventive healthcare - we will have established a firm foundation upon which successful young lives may be built.
A beautiful quote attributed to the North American poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson, defines success as follows:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
With the Lord's grace and your help, I know that Rebecca Children's Clinic will be a formidable force in promoting successful lives on behalf of orphaned children in the Dominican Republic through the provision of quality preventive healthcare. I hope you will join me on what promises to be an exciting and rewarding undertaking.
